On previous visits, we had stayed at the Emily Morgan Hotel. The last time we were downtown, however, we walked through the Menger Hotel and were immediately intrigued by its beautiful lobby, old-world character, and incredible history. We made a note that someday we should stay there.
In San Antonio was spent at the historic Menger Hotel, located right beside the Alamo. Opened in 1859, it is known as the oldest continuously operating hotel west of the Mississippi. Walking through its Victorian-era lobby and quiet hallways feels a little like stepping back in time.
The hotel has welcomed presidents, military leaders, entertainers, athletes, and other famous guests over the years. Theodore Roosevelt famously recruited men for his Rough Riders at the Menger Bar, and Babe Ruth was also among the hotel’s many notable visitors.
Of course, the Menger is nearly as famous for its ghost stories as it is for its history. It is said to be one of the most haunted hotels in Texas, with stories of unexplained footsteps, mysterious figures, and former guests who may never have completely checked out.
We didn’t experience anything too dramatic during our stay—but we did have a couple of small, unexplained moments that made us stop, look at each other, and wonder whether we were really alone.
Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the Menger is a fascinating place to explore. Between the architecture, the history, the location, and the possibility of bumping into a guest from another century, it made for a memorable night in my hometown.
